Magic Sun Prints (The Fading Trick)
This is a "cool" experiment that shows how the Sun's rays can actually change the color of things.
What You Need: Dark-colored construction paper (blue, red, or purple work best), fun-shaped objects (leaves, keys, toy dinosaurs, or even your own hand!).
The Mission: Place your paper in a very sunny spot outside. Arrange your objects on top of the paper.
The Wait: Leave it there for at least 3β4 hours (no peeking!).
The Big Reveal: Pick up your objects. Youβll see a dark "shadow" where the object was, while the rest of the paper has been faded by the Sun!
Teamwork Tip: Ask your Grown-Up Guide to help you tape the corners of the paper down so the wind doesn't blow your art away!
The Solar Scorcher (The Magnifying Glass)
This is a "hot" experiment that shows how the Sunβs energy can be focused into one tiny, powerful point.
What You Need: A magnifying glass, a dried leaf or a piece of dark paper, and a sunny day.
The Mission: Hold the magnifying glass between the Sun and your leaf. Move it up and down until the light turns into a tiny, super-bright "star" on the leaf.
The Science: Watch closely! In a few seconds, youβll see a tiny wisp of smoke or a small hole start to burn through.
βοΈ SUPER IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: This experiment requires a "Solar Supervisor" (an adult). This tiny beam of light is very hot and can start a fire, so never do this alone or near dry grass. Never, ever look at the Sun through the magnifying glass because it's way too bright for your eyes and can cause damage!
